A man’s decision to take home his date’s barely touched $220 surf and turf has gone viral after she threatened to leave him at the restaurant over it. TikToker Squash, known as @squashwinz, shared the story in a video that racked up over six million views, with viewers largely siding with him.

According to BroBible, Squash explained that he had been feeling good after some workplace success and decided to treat himself and his date to a nice dinner. He wasn’t planning to watch the bill closely and just wanted to enjoy the evening. Things started well, with valet parking, a good table, and a bottle of wine.

The trouble started when it came time to order. Both had talked about getting the $35 bolognese, but when the waiter arrived, his date switched to a surf and turf with a side of caviar. Squash said the single dish cost more than he had expected their entire bill to be. He stayed calm and let it go, but noted she had put him in an uncomfortable position.

When the food arrived, his date barely touched it. She ate around three bites of lobster and a little caviar, leaving the plate nearly full. “The whole entire dish is sitting in front of her untouched,” Squash recalled. He admitted he was “a little bit upset,” questioning why she would pull “a f—ing curveball at the very last moment and order the most expensive thing on the menu to not even eat it.”

She threatened to leave over the to-go box

When the server came to clear their plates, Squash asked them to box up the surf and turf. He figured it was a perfectly good meal and saw no reason to waste it. That decision changed the entire mood of the date.

His date stared at him, in his words, “like he killed somebody.” He recalled her reaction: “She goes, ‘you’re gonna, you are gonna take these to go, you want to eat, you want to eat leftovers?’ She’s like holding back throw up as she says it.” When he confirmed he did want the leftovers, she drew a hard line. “She’s like, ‘I would never eat leftovers. Food is not good the next day… That’s insane. If you’re gonna take that, I’m gonna take myself home.'”

She followed through on that threat. Despite Squash offering to drive her, she called an Uber and left. He was left genuinely confused. “I took her to a nice dinner. She ordered the most expensive thing on the menu,” he said. “What didn’t get me a second date was ’cause I took the food home for leftovers.”

Viewers had strong opinions in the comments. Most agreed the date’s behavior was the bigger issue, calling it a major “ick.” Wasting a $220 dish she barely touched struck most people as rude, regardless of who was paying. Some took it further and suggested Squash should have asked for separate checks the moment she ordered the surf and turf, with one commenter writing, “This is an appropriate two separate checks situation.”

The video tapped into a broader conversation around dating etiquette and who pays. While it has long been common for one person to cover the bill on a first date, that norm has been shifting. Splitting the tab or going halves is now widely accepted.

What most commenters agreed on, however, is that ordering the most expensive item on the menu and then barely touching it is poor form, whatever the arrangement. This kind of story keeps surfacing online, alongside other viral dining disputes, like the debate over a man refusing a $24 tip just for opening a beer, where reactions were just as divided.

The story also highlighted how these small moments at restaurants can blow up online. Not long ago, a Tennessee woman’s Walmart biscuit find went similarly viral after a routine grocery purchase turned into a shocking discovery. People are quick to weigh in when something feels wrong, whether at a diner or a white-tablecloth restaurant.

As for Squash, he still has the leftovers. He just doesn’t have a second date.
