A Florida man’s attempt to honor firefighters on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks ended with a declined gesture and a poignant moment at the station’s flagpole. The encounter, captured in a TikTok video, shows the man being told his gift was not welcome at the fire station, according to the video.

The video, posted by a creator who identifies himself as Lou, shows him entering a fire station with a bouquet of purple flowers. He approaches two firefighters in uniform and explains his purpose. “Today is the 25th anniversary of 9/11, and, uh, you know, I really appreciate what you guys do for the community, so I wanted to bring some flowers for the station,” Lou says in the video.

One of the firefighters, who is wearing glasses and a mustache, responds by asking if Lou has a medical emergency. After Lou clarifies he is just trying to show support, the firefighter states, “We know what you’re doing, we just don’t— this is a place of business, this is not business-like, so we’d just like for you to leave.”

Firefighters cite policy as reason for declining the flowers

The interaction continues as the firefighter with the mustache repeats his request for Lou to leave. “We know what you’re doing. We just don’t— this is a place of business. This is not business-like, so we’d just like you to leave,” he says. Lou apologizes and asks, “You guys don’t want the flowers?” The firefighter replies, “It’s okay,” and the other firefighter hands the bouquet back to him.

The firefighter with the mustache then adds, “If you don’t need us, we’re gonna shut the big doors.” The video shows both firefighters walking away as a red garage door begins to close. Lou is then seen exiting the brick and yellow building, which has the number ’54’ displayed on it.

According to the video’s creator, outside, Lou narrates to the camera, saying, “Well, I was supposed to give these flowers to these beautiful firefighters, um, but I guess they didn’t want them.” He places the bouquet at the base of a flagpole, where an American flag is flying at half-mast. A bugle call, “Taps,” plays in the background as on-screen text reads, “Supporting first responders On 9/11” and “Rest in peace to all lives lost On 9/11.”

Lou concludes the video by saying, “However, on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I appreciate all firefighters out there who put their lives on the line for people like myself. So I want this to go out to anyone who is listening, and, uh, this message is for you. Thank you for all you guys do.” The video’s caption states, “Supporting first responders on the 25th aniversary of 9/11. Rest in peace to all the lives lost❤️💐.”

The video has drawn a range of reactions from viewers in its comment section. One commenter wrote, “No that’s mad disrespectful 😭💔💔💔.” Another person commented, “My department would never shut the door on anyone in our community.”

A third viewer stated, “That was incredibly rude. That was a very nice gesture and sorry that happened to you.” Another comment read, “The first guy seemed like he actually appreciated it and he looked so sad when he gave the flowers back 😭😭.”

Other commenters, some identifying themselves as first responders, weighed in. “As firemen i appreciate it, that was pretty unprofessional and not a proper response for a kind gesture. never seen something like this or anything close to this,” one person wrote. Another commented, “As someone in law enforcement, thank you. Im sorry these guys don’t know how to accept a simple act of kindness.”
