According to the video‘s creator, a private investigator’s TikTok video details a case where she was hired to follow a man suspected of lying to his girlfriend about a work trip. The investigator, known as Steph on the platform, said the client believed her boyfriend was not being truthful about driving to San Francisco for five days. The video shows surveillance that followed, which led to an airport.
Steph explained in the video that the client, her girlfriend, had grown suspicious. The client reported that the boyfriend, identified as Matt, had been “hiding his phone a lot” and was coming home late from work. The client’s specific concern was that Matt was not actually driving to San Francisco as he claimed.
The video shows footage from inside Steph’s car as she began surveillance. She stated she drove for “about an hour and 44 minutes” after watching Matt load a suitcase into his car. Steph said the client had only paid for four hours of surveillance to see if Matt picked anyone up along the way.
Surveillance revealed a different travel plan than the one the client had been told
The video footage then shows Matt parking his car in a structure. Steph narrated that he got out and entered the back seat of a black SUV. She expressed surprise, questioning who was in the vehicle. Steph decided to follow the black car.
The footage shows the black car arriving at Los Angeles International Airport. Steph exclaimed in the video, “Matthew, Matthew, Matthew done did it now because this ain’t San Francisco, this is LAX.” She parked her own car and continued to follow on foot.
On the airport sidewalk, the video shows a man and a woman exiting the black car. Both were pulling rolling suitcases. Steph observed that they were “acting like they don’t know each other.” She sarcastically addressed Matt in her narration, saying, “Go get your girl. Go put your little arm around her, Matthew.”
The pair then entered the airport terminal. Inside, Steph continued filming as they approached a check-in counter. She noted the airline signage appeared to be for Hawaiian Airlines, but she was uncertain. She said it “looked like Hawaiian Airlines, but Japan was right on the side.”
Steph then ended the surveillance to update her client. The video concludes with her back in her car, delivering a recorded phone message. She told the client, “he’s definitely going on a trip, um, but he’s not driving there.” She recounted that he parked his vehicle, got into a black car, and she followed it to LAX. She confirmed, “there was a girl that got out with him,” and she followed them inside.
In the same update, Steph said the destination “looks like Hawaii, um, but it could be something different. It could— he could be going to San Francisco or Japan, girl, I don’t know.” The video’s public caption states, “Client hired me to follow her bf to see if he was really going on a trip for work…” The uncertainty about the destination highlights how quickly travel plans can change, as a Southwest flight to Maui recently turned back after a passenger threw a phone mid-air.
Social media users react to the surveillance story

Some commenters offered advice to the hypothetical girlfriend. One suggestion was, “If I were the girlfriend, I’d get the spare keys & go pick up his vehicle. Let him explain that.” Another comment simply stated, “wow WE NEED AN UPDATE.”
Other viewers questioned the effort involved. One person commented, “That’s a lot of effort for a boyfriend.” Another user asked the investigator directly, “Have you ever been caught doing surveillance?🤔🤔🤔.”
