A woman said she found a dark, hardened object inside a sealed bag of Great Value tortilla chips after her son opened the bag, and she asked Walmart to explain what it was. The woman, who goes by Shelby and posts under the TikTok handle @weightlossmama, shared the discovery in a video filmed in her kitchen.

In the video, Shelby said her son had just opened the bag when she noticed the object inside. She held up a green bag labeled “Great Value Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips” and then pulled out a large, dark brown, lumpy object covered in white specks, according to the video.

“It was in it, sealed bag,” Shelby said in the video, emphasizing that the bag had not been opened before her son got to it. She repeated the brand and store name, saying, “Great Value” and “Walmart,” while holding up the object for the camera.

Shelby asked viewers whether the chips were still safe to eat

Shelby appeared visibly disturbed as she showed the object on camera. “What is this?” she asked in the video. She then turned to her viewers for answers, saying, “Can someone please let me know? Are these chips not good to eat then?”

@weightlossmama

Can anyone tell us, what is this? Just some great value tortilla chips and this is what is inside….. is the bag safe? We just wanted nachos…. @Walmart @greatvaluewalmart #walmart #chips #food #whatisthis #greatvalue

The on-screen caption in the video read, “@Walmart what’s this?” directly tagging the retailer. It is unclear from the video whether Walmart or the manufacturer of Great Value products had responded to Shelby’s question at the time of posting.

Great Value is a private-label brand sold by Walmart. The products under this label are reportedly made by various third-party manufacturers rather than by Walmart itself. A commenter on Shelby’s video, using the handle @desertlandscapes, appeared to reference this arrangement, writing, “Great Value items are made by a manufacturer that is common. Just has the Great Value name. Look it up :)”

The comment section on Shelby’s video included a range of reactions. One user wrote, “don’t buy great value, ever. it’s trash!” Another commenter, using the name Cheryl, reacted to Shelby handling the object directly, writing, “AND YOU TOUCHED IT.”

The exact nature or origin of the object Shelby found has not been confirmed. Shelby did not specify in the video what she believed the object to be, and no testing results or official findings were referenced in the video or the description accompanying it.

Food safety concerns involving foreign objects in packaged goods are typically investigated by the manufacturer or by regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, though no such investigation was mentioned in connection with this specific incident. Similar concerns have been raised by other consumers, like a Tennessee woman who found metal inside Pillsbury biscuits bought from Walmart.

The video has drawn attention on social media, with users in the comment section debating the likely cause of the object and whether it posed a health risk. Some commenters speculated about possible explanations.

Great Value is one of Walmart’s most widely sold private-label brands, covering a broad range of grocery items, including snack foods. Products sold under private-label brands are commonly manufactured by third-party companies under contract with the retailer, according to the commenter who addressed the topic in Shelby’s video.

Neither Walmart nor a representative for the Great Value brand had publicly addressed Shelby’s video or the specific concern she raised. Shelby has not indicated in the video whether she filed a formal complaint with Walmart or sought a refund or replacement for the product.

The video continues to receive comments from viewers, some of whom said they had experienced similar issues with packaged food products in the past. Other shoppers have reported similar discoveries, such as a woman who found something growing inside a bag of potato chips.
