A TikTok video posted by the creator known as “Whiskey and Violence Golf” appears to show a payment terminal at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant displaying a tip calculation that one customer said did not add up. The clip, filmed from a close angle on the screen, shows the check amount listed as $66.66 and the 20% tip option highlighted.
The terminal screen in the video shows a check amount of $66.66, with tip percentage options of 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25%. With the 20% option highlighted, the screen displays a tip of $16.28 and a total of $82.94, with a button reading “PAY $82.94.”
A voice in the video questioned the numbers. “at Texas Roadhouse, right? Is my math off, or is 20% of $66 not f—ing $16?” the person said. The video’s caption reads, “What’s up Texas Roadhouse?” and includes hashtags related to fidget toys, Texas, and slang terms.
Commenters pointed to pre-discount totals and pre-tax tipping practices
The video appears to have drawn a range of responses in its comment section, with some viewers doing their own math and others suggesting the terminal may have been calculating the tip based on a different figure than the one shown on screen.
One commenter wrote, “20% of $66.66 is $13.33,” which would indeed be lower than the $16.28 tip displayed on the terminal in the video. Another commenter offered a possible explanation for the gap, writing, “as it says at the top the tips are calculated off your total pre discounts. According to the video’s creator, your pre discount total was 81.40 you got a free appetizer or something.” That commenter appeared to suggest the tip may have been figured from a higher original total before a discount was applied, though the video itself does not show any pre-discount total on the screen.
A third commenter wrote in all capital letters, “TIPS BASED OFF PRE-DISCOUNT TOTAL,” echoing that explanation. Another person in the comments argued that tips should not be calculated on taxes, writing, “Tip on PRE-TAX only. why would we tip on the tax that’s collected?”
Some commenters focused on what they would do in the situation. One wrote, “I’m leaving 3 dollars, complain to your employer” followed by an eye-roll emoji. Another suggested the customer should take the issue up with payment processors, writing, “Hi. So please report that directly to Visa and mastercard. Separate forms. Thats a huge violation.”
The video does not show any additional context beyond the payment terminal screen and the off-screen voice questioning the math. It is not clear from the clip alone whether the terminal was in fact calculating the tip incorrectly or whether the discrepancy had another explanation, such as a pre-discount total or an added tax amount. Texas Roadhouse has not publicly commented on the video. Texas Roadhouse has drawn other customer complaints on TikTok, such as when a user said she found what appeared to be a small worm on her broccoli stem at the chain.
