A TikTok user is sharing her experience after allegedly finding a bat in the bedroom of a Vrbo rental property. The creator, who goes by the handle @adriaaaaahhhh, posted a video detailing the incident and the subsequent response she said she received from the host.
In the video, the woman states she found a bat in her bedroom the previous night. She said the host’s response was that “bats are to be expected, there’s nothing we can do.” After spending the night in the cabin with the bat, she said she and her group packed up and left early the next morning.
The video shows a screenshot of a message the woman said she sent to the host. The message reads: “Hey we left pretty early this morning, I need to get a rabies shot. The bat is still in the cabin, last we saw it was up in the attic room.” She then states the host called her and told her “there was going to be absolutely no refunds, I don’t need to get a rabies shot, and she doesn’t want to see a single hospital bill from me.”
Creator provides updates on health and pet after the incident
The woman explains in the video that she removed a previous clip of the phone call because she wants to handle parts of the situation privately. She then provides updates, stating she has returned home and her doctor has advised her to get a rabies shot. She says she is currently on a waiting list at an urgent care facility to receive the vaccine.
She also addresses her dog, a golden retriever named Oatmeal, who is visible resting on a couch behind her. The woman says she called Oatmeal’s vet, who determined the dog does not need a booster shot because he received his rabies vaccine two months ago. “So he’s all good,” she states. “I just need to get the rabies vaccine.”
The video’s caption says, “update on the @Vrbo bat situation!! (I’m getting vaccinated for rabies).” The on-screen text at the top of the clip reads “bat in the Vrbo 🦇 (update).”
The incident has sparked discussion in the video’s comment section. One viewer commented, “CDC guidelines literally state if you wake up in a room with a bat, you have to get the shot.” Another wrote, “VRBO needs to delist her. That is a health issue.” A third comment questioned the host’s stance, saying, “Why are bats to be expected? Are you in Transylvania?”
Some comments focused on potential next steps. One user advised, “Yeah definitely file a claim against the host insurance. If it’s on the California side of Tahoe, shes in violation. A bat in the house means she most likely has an infestation or had one, and she is 100% liable. Mountain town or not. She definitely knew.” Another comment noted the potential cost, stating, “Heads up the rabies vaccine is $20,000 if you don’t have insurance.” A lighter remark about the dog read, “Oatmeal is not amused.”
